My Design Choises

I wasn’t sure immediately how to start this project, with so little guidance or even desires on the client’s part. Since starting can be helpful, I went right to the title of the poster: it could either be called “AFP Community Showcase” or “Arts and Foundational Programs Community Showcase”. I went with the latter because as I made it bigger and bigger, the two parts of the title naturally distinguished themselves from each other. My concern with it was making it not just legible to readers, but also easily understandable, because, what even is this event? What does community showcase even mean? What does AFP stand for?

The next part was the background. I wanted the poster to have a textured quality while providing the information, back to the question “what does AFP stand for?” The background is made up of all the different programs one can find under the AFP banner.

Then it was on to displaying the main information (who, what, when, where, why, how). The OC logo was placed in the corner, and that gave me the idea to bring circles into the rest of the design. Different circles with different information placed around the poster helped to create movement and energy.

Originally I thought primary colours but quickly scratched that as being too reminiscent of primary school and art classes. I really wanted to have the colour orange but it was too much. In the end, yellow, green, and blue created the right mood and energy.
